We are looking for volunteers to work side-by-side with instructors in adult education classrooms. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Amy Shockley to learn more about this opportunity.
Volunteers work as tutors and they may work with individuals or with small groups. Eastern Shore Community College provides training for volunteers through the Adult Education program. Volunteers are provided with support on the job under the direction of a master teacher, in on-line courses offered by Virginia Commonwealth University Adult Learning Resources Center, and in semi-annual staff development workshops at ESCC.
Our volunteers offer services in our GED program and also in the English Language Learning classes.
Generally, Volunteers work through and with a particular teacher and class. They may also sometimes teach a class depending on the individual situation. As a volunteer, you may work consistently with one student over a period of time, or you may enjoy the variety of ‘floating’ and working with different people each time. Some of our volunteers even specialize in specific subject areas. Although materials are provided, we have had some enjoy creating their own!
This is a wonderful opportunity if you are a patient and compassionate person who enjoys working with people and helping others to succeed.
The hours and time commitments are flexible. You are welcome to create a schedule that meets your personal needs. Some volunteers attend each class session, others come once a week. Occasionally we have a volunteer that comes on a random basis. All volunteers are welcome. We need your services and are open to working around your schedule.
Contact Amy Shockley at 757-789-1793 to learn more about how you can become a volunteer. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
