Melfa, VA – Approximately 80 new college students, parents and spouses attended Freshman Orientation at Eastern Shore Community College the evening of  Tuesday, August 6.
Freshman orientation gives students and their families an opportunity to learn what they need to know to prepare for college success. Bryan Smith, Dean of Student Services explained, “Many of our students are first generation college students and do not know what to expect during their first days on campus. Our goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible.”

In addition to the informational sessions, students had an opportunity to get their student photo identification card, register for the ESCC Alert program, tour the campus, make schedule changes, check their financial aid status, purchase textbooks, learn about student clubs,and make tuition payments.

The college continues to meet the educational needs of the Shore. Smith explains, “We are seeing many out-of-work and underemployed Eastern Shore citizens looking to us to provide them with the skills necessary to move into a new career. Also, families are facing the higher costs of a four-year college or university are looking at ESCC as a practical and close-to-home way to make higher education more affordable. In fact, this year we anticipate awarding almost three million dollars in financial aid to Eastern Shore students.”

Fall classes begin August 21.
