ESCC Welcomes New Dean of Workforce Development

Eastern Shore Community College announces the new Dean of Workforce Development, DeQuan Smith. Since 2011, Smith has served the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) as professor of hospitality management at NOVA and most recently serving as the faculty advising manager for the division of business and public service. Throughout his tenure Smith has created and maintained a dynamic portfolio to include: Faculty of the Year Nominee the past four consecutive years, Super Professor Award through the Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning, National Institute of Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award. In 2015, Smith was a participant in the American Association of Community College’s Future Leaders Institute.
DeQuan received his undergraduate degree in Hospitality Management, and Master’s degree in Sport Management from Virginia State University. During his career in hotel management, he has held leadership roles with Marriott International and Intercontinental Hotels Group. DeQuan has completed his doctoral studies, and is currently finishing his dissertation.
Smith states that his first order of business is to meet with the college’s business and community partners to become acquainted, evaluate their needs and to explain available resources at ESCC. “Workforce development is crucial to the economic vitality of the Shore. One of my key responsibilities will be expanding our relationships with our external partners and meeting the area’s corporate training needs as well.
