Eastern Shore Community College and the Workforce Development Services, presented the “Women in Technology” Expo on Tuesday June 28th. The two-hour event was divided into segments ranging from hands on demonstrations to panel discussions, and the introduction of some new technology at the college.
Upon entering the Expo, attendees were given a first-hand look at 3D Printing technology, guided by ESCC electronics student Yanet Castro. New welding instructor Travis Connelly and his wife Berritt demoed welding techniques, and Lori Kelley of ESCC electronics program manned a working computer repair demo, complete with testing and diagnostic gear.
ESCC President, Dr. Linda Thomas-Glover, and Vice President of Academics, Dr. Kimberly Britt, teamed together to provide the audience welcome and introductions, by utilizing the colleges newest technology, a telepresence robot that takes on the identity of its operator. Dr. Glover was able to address the crowd, appearing on the screen face of the bot, and explained to the group how “iMYO” would be utilized on campus and in the community in a number of applications. The name is inspired by the phrase, “I Maximize Your Opportunities”.
Keynote speaker Amber Parker presented the keynote address, “Empowering Women through Science and Technology”. Parker is the Executive Director of the Chincoteague Bay Field Station. A panel discussion was also a highlight, moderated by Dr. Britt, and featuring panelists, Amy Davis of NASA Wallops, Bernita Justis at LJT & Associates, and Lori Kelley of the ESCC Electronics Program. These ladies brought insight, humor, and practical guidance, to any females embarking on tech related careers that have been typically dominated by males in the past.
In addition to receiving information on how Eastern Shore Community College and its educational partners can play a role in preparing students for more technology based career opportunities, attendees had the chance to win a number of door prizes and interact and network with career professionals at the event.
ESCC offers technology programs in electricity, electronics technology, computer specialization, HVAC, industrial tech, and welding.
