LTCA Pinning – 2014
The Long Term Care Program (LTCA) is designed to provide the entry level LTCA student with the fundamental nursing skills essential for providing patient care services under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
Students are prepared to fulfill the minimum requirements for being eligible to sit for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination to become certified as nurse aides and obtain listing on the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry. The program has full approval by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Graduate Careers
The Long Term Care Aide (LTCA) program at Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) is designed to prepare individuals to gain employment as nurse aides, personal care aides, home health aides in long term care facilities, assisting living facilities, home health and personal care agencies, rehabilitation facilities, and acute care facilities.
Required Courses and Semester Plan – Ten credits
1. HCT 101 Health Care Technician 4 credits
2. HCT 190 Coordinated Internship 2 credits
3. HCT 105 CPR 1 credit
Upon completion of these courses the student receives a certificate as a nurse aide and is eligible to sit for the VIRGINIA NATIONAL NURSE AIDE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (NNAAP) nurse aide certifying examination.
4. HCT 115 Register Medication Aide 3 credits
Upon completion of the HCT 115 Registered Medication Aide class the student is eligible to receive a Career Studies Certification from ESCC and can march at the following ESCC commencement program. Students may sit for the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) certifying exam to become a certified medication aide.
The VBON mandates an 80% pass on unit tests. The grading scale for the program is as follows:
- A 94 – 100
- B 87 – 93
- C 80 – 86
- D 74 – 79
- F 73 and below
Note: Students must receive a C in each class.
Upon completion of the 10 credits students are eligible for a Career Study Certificate from ESCC.
Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)
The LTCA program does not qualify for Pell Grant tuition assistance. Applicants should contact Tina Stratton-Taylor (757.789.1757) , WIOA Program Manager, to apply for WIOA tuition assistance.
Program Notes
The nursing law of Virginia addresses criteria for application for nurse aide certification. The Virginia Board of Nursing has the power to deny the opportunity to become certified through testing if the applicant has committed a felony/misdemeanor violating the provisions of 54-367.32 of the Code of Virginia. A student’s eligibility to take the nurse aide certification exam cannot be determined until application for certification is received by the State Board of Nursing.
Some health care facilities may not employ individuals or allow students to participate in clinical experiences in their facilities who have committed certain criminal acts. Any student that has committed any illegal offenses other than minor traffic violations should discuss these matters with the program director for further clarification. Students who have convictions may be prohibited from clinical practice and may not complete the program. Students are responsible for costs related to required testing fees, liability insurance, uniforms and criminal background checks.
Students with Disabilities
Students with disabilities who meet the program requirements, complete the physical exam and submit the physical form signed by the health care provider stating that they are able to perform as a certified nurse aide in the clinical setting are eligible for acceptance into the program. It is the responsibility of the student to meet the physical/mental/legal requirements for state licensure.
