Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce Membership Coordinator

Full Time Position
The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce and Certified Visitor Center seeks enthusiastic,
motivated individual to work closely with the chamber membership and visitors to the island.
A cheerful, positive attitude and ability to work within a small office setting are essential.
The Membership & Visitor Services Coordinator reports directly to and is supervised by the
Executive Director. This is a support position to the Executive Director requiring knowledge of
all facets of office operations and procedures utilizing advanced public relations skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software is required.

Administrative tasks include point of sale, letter writing, ordering office and janitorial supplies
at competitive prices, maintaining multiple databases and website, and creating weekly
e-newsletter. Knowledge of office machines such as copier and postage meter is preferred.
This position is responsible for development and distribution of the Chincoteague Island Visitor
Guide & Membership Directory while working closely with the chamber membership and
publisher to meet deadlines for print and digital platforms. Distribution to bulk markets and
individuals, verification of invoices from warehouse before payment of shipping charges, and ad
sales are required.


Visitor Services include direct assistance in the office, answering phone calls and emails, mailing
of Visitor Guides, maintaining adequate supply of members’ brochures and distributing the
chamber’s Visitor Guide to area businesses. Working knowledge of chamber businesses, area
attractions, services and resources is necessary.


Saturday and evening hours may be required to staff the office or while working at chambersponsored events and functions. Salary is commensurate with experience.

We are currently seeking a Shipping Assistant to assist the Shipping Manager with day-to-day duties. This person
will be responsible for answering the phone whether it be an internal team member, a contract shipper, Federal
Express, UPS or any number of vendors. You would gather the information needed for shipments to go out
accurately, smoothly and on-time. You are adept at software programs and learning new techniques. You must
have detailed experience in the use of MS Word, Excel, Outlook and computer programs in general.
Responsibilities:
-Produce daily project logs so that the daily schedule runs smoothly and productively.
-Professionally correspond with internal and external parties through email and phone calls to delegate shipping
details and exceptions.
-Thoroughly determine that orders are packed correctly and are shipped out on a timely basis.
-Use of Sage software to verify orders are not on hold and that they contain all details and materials necessary to
ship.
-Correctly input receipts of goods to reflect accurate inventory.
-Utilize shipping software to produce packing labels and Bill of Lading with accuracy and detail to ensure they are
shipped to the correct destination.
-Run and send end of day shipping and tracking reports to Sales and Support.
-Respond to emails in a most professional manner.
-Answer the phone timely and professionally.
-Assist on the shipping dock when needed.
-Proven proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Power Point and all things computer related.

Duties:  May include but are not limited to the thorough inspection and cleaning of horseshoe crabs; repeated placement and removal of live horseshoe crabs from bleeding rack; continuous transport of racks to and from the bleeding area; cleaning of the lab and crab preparation room; and potential participation in continuous on the job training – which may include training in the aseptic bleeding of horseshoe crabs.

UVA Research Support Specialist Eastern Shore

The Virginia Coast Reserve LTER is seeking a Research Support Specialist (Lab and Research Technician 2) to support research operations at the University of Virginia’s Coastal Research Center located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The Research Support Specialist will join the LTER staff to provide boating, field, and other logistical support for long-term ecological project operations and related research initiatives. 

The Research Support Specialist coordinates daily with a small, dynamic team of station staff and a large, varied community of researchers. Duties include boating researchers throughout seaside waterways to access research sites, assisting as needed in field work, and helping staff coordinate boating and field safety at the station. The Specialist also helps maintain our long-term ecological studies by assisting with sampling programs related to water quality, coastal habitat, and meteorological data. Both field and laboratory duties will be required. The Specialist position is based on site at the Coastal Research Center (Oyster, VA). 

The preferred candidate is expected to  

  • have experience working around water and boats (in a coastal setting) 
  • demonstrate the ability to safely navigate shallow coastal waterways in small craft, such as skiffs, using basic boat trailering, handling, and troubleshooting and using operational knowledge of tidal systems, navigation charts, and tide tables 
  • be willing to evaluate scenarios and make safety and operations calls (using established policies, real time information like weather, and common sense) and support others to do the same 
  • exhibit resilience and adaptability to variable situations, including weather and scheduling challenges 
  • demonstrate the ability to use clear communication to coordinate across teams 
  • have or be willing to obtain fundamental computing skills, including email and Microsoft Office programs 
  • understand or be willing to learn how to follow scientific protocols and best practices for responsible handling of samples and data 
  • demonstrate the ability to work effectively with and support diverse local and scientific communities.
