Medical Assisting Program Can Bring Goals Into Focus

10/23/2021

“I want to be able to treat people like I would want to be treated when needing help,” said Liliana Rosa, a student in YOUR Eastern Shore Community College’s Medical Assisting (MA) Program.

The MA program prepares individuals as multi-skilled healthcare workers in hospitals, physician offices, urgent care facilities, and nursing homes. It also serves as a common starting point for students with aspirations of becoming Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and ultimately Registered Nurses (RN).

Liliana, of Machipongo, has her eye on an RN degree. Since high school, where she graduated from Northampton in 2017, she has maintained an interest in helping others.

It was at Northampton where Liliana met ESCC Career Coach Suzanne Henderson and Devin Allen, Access College Advisor. Both assisted her with applying for financial aid (FAFSA).

Henderson commented that Liliana “was very goal oriented, but she had an important lesson to learn—“it’s ok to ask for help.” And no one supports students better than ESCC.

Help came in the form of scholarship support for Liliana. “Student support at ESCC is how students’ hopes and dreams are transformed into real careers,” explained Henderson.

Now an LPN student, Liliana hopes to utilize the LPN to RN bridge program in 2022 to expedite her efforts.

To all goals there is a starting block. For those pursuing healthcare careers, the Medical Assisting program provides that and an abundance of financial support available through state initiatives and ESCC’s own YES! Tuition Promise.
