Associate in Applied Science Degree

The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing is a cooperative program between Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) and Tidewater Community Colleges.  It is designed for students who plan to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

The program provides a background for maximum transfer opportunities to baccalaureate nursing. Nurses are eligible for employment in a variety of acute care facilities or long-term care facilities, hospices, home health services, mental health facilities, rehabilitation centers, health departments, and doctors' offices.

Students have planned theory and clinical practice in medical/surgical nursing, obstetrical nursing, pediatric nursing, and psychiatric nursing. Students also manage the care for a group of clients during preceptorship experience. Leadership and management concepts are included in Dimensions of Professional Nursing.

The Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing requires five semesters of full-time study and is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

The Board of Nursing can deny licensure to any applicant who has filed false credentials and/or who has falsely represented facts on the application for licensure and/or has committed a felony/misdemeanor. Certain health facilities may not employ individuals who have committed certain criminal acts and may conduct criminal background checks before hiring.

Faculty

Jeanine Freeze, RN, PhD, Professor of Nursing and Program Manager has had a variety of clinical and managerial experiences in nursing and has been the lead instructor at ESCC for fifteen years. According to Dr. Freeze, "Teaching students is a true joy and pleasure! Not only do I get to see the student develop as a professional nurse, I get to know them as a person."

Dianne Reimann, R.N., M.S.N, also has a wealth of clinical and supervisory responsibilities in nursing as well as many years experience in teaching.
