VCCA Award Winners

Melfa, VAThe Virginia Community Colleges Association (VCCA) honored Kim Grewe and Amanda Phillips as 2009 Showcase Award recipients at the 27th Annual VCCA Conference held October 1-3, 2009 at Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Showcase awards are presented annually to VCCA members who exhibit leadership and professional development on their home campus as well as in their community. Each college in the Virginia Community College System selects faculty and staff support recipients. 
 
Kim Grewe, Instructor of English, has taught at the College since 1996. She also received a NISLD Teaching Excellence Award in 2009 and attended an NEH Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop in Concord, Massachusetts this past July. Grewe earned her bachelor’s degree in English from St. Vincent College and has a master’s degree in Composition and Rhetoric from Salisbury University, and is currently pursuing another master’s degree in Educational Technology in an online program offered through San Diego State University.   Kim also led a workshop titled, Using Google Apps to “Brighten” your Blackboard site at the VCCA Conference.
 
Mandy Phillips serves as an Administrative Office Specialist handling purchasing and accounts payable for the College. She graduated from James Madison University with a B.S., in anthropology.   Mandy has served at ESCC for almost two years. She lives in Melfa with her husband, John.
 
Also recognized at the conference was Dr. James Brofee who received a VCCA Excellence in Communications Award. He placed third in the 3D object category for a career services promotional pen giveaway item. Brofee serves as Career Services Counselor at the College. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Elizabethtown College, his master’s degree from West Chester University and his doctorate degree from Temple University.
