For 15 years, the ESCC Heritage Celebration has assembled an impressive lineup of local talent and resources, creating a fun and enjoyable day that showcases many facets of our wonderful Eastern Shore. Eastern Shore Community College is excited to present the 2016 edition of this popular event, on Saturday, February 27th from 10:00 am-3:00 pm, encompassing both the Workforce Development Center, and the main building on campus at ESCC in Melfa.
Free to the public, the 15th Annual Heritage Celebration again offers a wide and diverse selection of exhibitors and participants. Artists will include Diana Davis, Captain Debbie Ritter, Marty Toner, Robbin Hogge, Kit Fechtig, David Rogers Sr., Jean Savage, Wilma Simpson, Nancy West and more. Some of our featured crafters will include Mara Dovis and Vesna Zidovec, Carl Allums, Guy and Kristi Shover, Mama Girl, Ed Kuhn, Brenda Llewellyn, Elizabeth Hunt and Donna Natoli, Cecil Watts, Bobby Bridges, Billy Crockett, and Colleen Patterson.
Handmade jewelry, knitting, and more will be featured with Elaine Kaiser, Shannon Gordon, Stephanie Templin, Peggy Christian, Margaret Martin, Gertrude Fendler, Rheba Wharton, Robin Moshur, Brenda Holden and Mary Waldron. Addressing a broad range of other interests, will be the E.S. Nature Conservancy/Virginia Coast Reserve, Pungo Creek Mills, E.S. Historical Society, E.S. Soil and Water Conservation District, Va. Dept. of Veterans Services, Virginia Master Naturalists (featuring a herpetology exhibit), E.S. Public Library, Cape Charles Historical Society, The Onley Train Station (with model train displays), Waterman’s Heritage Foundation, Barrier Island Center, US Coast Guard Flotilla 12-02, E.S. Beekeepers Guild, Allen Bernard-Blacksmith, E.S. Antique Tractor Club, and the E.S. Amateur Radio Club.
There is truly something for everyone at the Heritage Celebration. For the kids, a number of special activities will be offered with the ESCC Performing Arts Club, plus Smokey The Bear from the Department of Forestry, and a fire truck and Fire Safety Smoke House with the Melfa Volunteer Fire Department.
The Heritage Café will be open for business, featuring homemade chili, cornbread, nachos, hot dogs, chips, baked goods, sodas, water and coffee. In addition to tasty lunch and snack options, live music will be featured in the café; courtesy of our community partners at ESO Arts Center. Local talents Austin Riopel, Lady Vee, Scott & Melinda, and the Reasoners will all be performing.
Heritage Celebration visitors will also have the chance to win impressive prize assortments, stocked by artists, crafters, and exhibitors. Entries into the random drawings are gained by participating in the Heritage Sampler Scavenger Hunt. By following simple clues and collecting a few details throughout the event, individuals will be eligible for several random drawings. Also, starting at 10am, the first 100 visitors to the celebration will receive a beautiful hardback book on the history of Cobb Island Virginia, courtesy of Shore Bank.
With the support of the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation, ESCC is proud to offer this event free to the public, and encourages everyone, regardless of age, to plan to attend and enjoy the wide variety of Eastern Shore offerings in an endless number of categories.
